MONSTER
After graduating from college in 2017, I began creating a series of artwork featuring myself and a character I named ‘the friendly anxiety monster.’ He was my shadow, a representation of the weight I felt entering this new stage of my life, but he also depicted a closeness that was both strange and comfortable.
Over time, my relationship with the friendly anxiety monster evolved as I went through several life changes including cross-country moves, job switches, industry changes, breakups, new relationships, and the pandemic. My artwork with the friendly anxiety monster became a medium for me to process these events in life.
I use a lot of symbolism and repetition in my illustrative practice, and these themes were very evident in my pieces of the friendly anxiety monster: phones, beds, windows, organic shapes, and furniture, as well as colors and textures. I use repetition as a means of connecting my work and as a tool to represent the concepts I am exploring in my practice.
